LUNG TREES - ALBERI POLMONE

“Lung trees” – bare and dried, standing still on Earth spinning around, illuminated by thousands of stars.

The subject matter of the work are actual human lungs found in Old Anatomical Theatre of University of Tartu – back in 60’s and 70’s such corrosion models where made using corrosion casting technique where the blood vessels of the organ were filled with a malleable substance, that was subsequently allowed to solidify, after which the surrounding tissues were removed by biological, enzymatic or chemical maceration. This was used by medical students to study lung segments.

The montage is a combination of bringing together humans with nature and medical science with art. Author’s aim is to remind us that trees are the lungs of the earth and that protecting those lungs is crucial if we are to defend the planet and fight global warming.
